Overview
In 1972, the Alberta Advisory Board on Recreation for the Disabled (AABRD) was formed to act as a catalyst in the promotion of recreation services for people with disabilities. Twelve years later, the AABRD felt that it had fulfilled its primary objective and entrusted the selection and distribution of its awards and scholarships to the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association. Support for the AABRD Award is provided through a Legacy Fund, managed by the Government of Alberta.
The Alberta Advisory Board on Recreation for the Disabled (AABRD) Legacy Award, was established to honour the achievements of individuals, communities, and organizations in Alberta, recognizes outstanding contributions towards advancing integrated recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities.This award celebrates initiatives that promote accessibility and participation in recreational activities for individuals with diverse abilities.

- Individuals or Groups
- Alberta Recreation & Parks Association membership is encouraged and may be prioritized in the selection process
The initiative must:
- Demonstrate innovative initiatives that contribute to recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities
After you apply:
The ARPA Awards and Scholarships Committee with representation from all aspects of the recreation and parks sector and across the province will select the award recipient. The committee will evaluate the nominations by rating:
- Innovative Approach: Nominees must demonstrate innovative approaches in developing and implementing projects, programs, or facilities that enhance recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities. These initiatives should reflect creative solutions that address barriers and promote inclusivity in recreational settings.
- Impact and Reach: The nominated project, program, or facility should have a significant and measurable impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities, improving their access to and participation in recreational activities. Applicants should provide evidence of the reach and effectiveness of their initiatives within the community.
- Accessibility and Universal Design: The nominated initiative should prioritize accessibility and universal design principles to ensure that recreational opportunities are inclusive and accommodating to individuals with diverse abilities. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to removing physical, social, economic and attitudinal barriers in recreational environments.
The Alberta Recreation & Parks Association presents the award during the ARPA Conference & Energize Workshop. Award recipients will receive:
- Recognition at the ARPA Conference President’s Award Dinner
- Two tickets to the President’s Award Dinner, option to purchase additional tickets available
- Mileage reimbursement and 1 night hotel accommodations to attend the President’s Award Dinner
- A keepsake to display in their facilities
