Parks Excellence Award

Overview

The Parks Excellence Award, established by the Alberta Recreation & Parks Association (ARPA) Parks and Open Space Network, honors achievements and innovative initiatives in parks and open space operations, aiming to elevate the profile of parks and open space professionals in Alberta.


Eligibility

  • Alberta based initiative.
  • Communities or Organizations include: 
    • Municipalities
    • Not for Profit Organizations
    • Business
    • Individuals or Groups
  • Alberta Recreation & Parks Association membership is encouraged and may be prioritized in the selection process

The initiative must:

  • Showcase innovative practices and approaches in parks and open space operations, demonstrating originality, effectiveness, and adaptability in addressing community needs and challenges. Innovative practices could involve creative solutions, novel methodologies, or unique strategies that improve the management, design, or programming of parks and open spaces.
  • Demonstrate initiatives that promote the “Benefits of Recreation: Personal, Social, Economic, Environmental” (Framework for Recreation in Canada

After you apply:

The ARPA Awards and Scholarships Committee with representation from all aspects of the recreation and parks sector and across the province will select the award recipient. The committee will evaluate the nominations by rating: 

  • Impact and Success Metrics: Nominees should provide evidence of the impact and success of their initiatives, including measurable outcomes and indicators of success. This may include data on increased park usage, positive feedback from community members, or quantifiable improvements in community well-being, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships: Successful nominees will demonstrate effective collaboration and partnerships with stakeholders, community organizations, and other relevant entities in the planning, implementation, and management of parks and open space initiatives. Collaborative efforts that leverage diverse expertise and resources to achieve shared goals will be recognized.
  • Innovative Approach: Nominees must demonstrate innovative approaches in developing and implementing projects, programs, or facilities that enhance parks and open space operations, demonstrating originality, effectiveness, and adaptability. 


The Alberta Recreation & Parks Association presents the award during the ARPA Conference & Energize Workshop. Award recipients will receive:

  • Recognition at the ARPA Conference President’s Award Dinner 
  • Two tickets to the President’s Award Dinner, option to purchase additional tickets available 
  • Mileage reimbursement and 1 night hotel accommodations to attend the President’s Award Dinner 
  • A keepsake to display in their facilities
